Nondegree Application

How to Apply

If you are interested in taking courses as a part-time nondegree undergraduate student (you do not intend to earn a degree from the University), you will need to submit the nondegree application through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

If you have previously attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a degree-seeking or nondegree student (fall/spring only), you do not need to submit a nondegree application through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. However, you will need to contact the college which offers the courses in which you wish to enroll. You may be required to complete an application for the college for nondegree status on a semester by semester basis. In most cases, if you're seeking nondegree status for summer terms only, you're not required to resubmit applications. But, if you want to take courses in the fall or spring term, you need to submit a nondegree application.

Course enrollment for spring or fall requires the approval of the department offering the course and the college of enrollment at the beginning of each semester. Please note the Colleges of Applied Health Sciences, Business, Media, and Education and the Institute of Aviation do not consider nondegree applicants due to space constraints in courses. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences generally does not consider nondegree applicants in overenrolled or crowded curricula.

Preference for nondegree admission for the spring or fall term will be given to (1) employees of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, (2) applicants who are permanent residents of the Champaign-Urbana community, and (3) applicants who are trying to take courses that are not offered anywhere else in the state of Illinois. Please read the complete nondegree application for other restrictions.

Due to space limitations for admission and due to government regulations on student visas, international students are unable to apply for nondegree admission for the spring and fall terms. However, international students currently in the US and holding a visa that allows part-time or full-time study are able to apply for nondegree admission for the summer term only.

Deadlines and Fees

Spring Nondegree Applications – November 30
Fall Nondegree Applications – July 31

Applicants interested in applying for the summer term should apply as soon as possible after February 1. Nondegree applications from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign employees are accepted through the first day of class.

If applying for the spring or fall term, you must submit a transcript (official or unofficial) showing your highest level of academic achievement along with your application and fee ($40). If applying for the summer term only, you must sign that you are currently in good academic standing when completing the application. The $40 fee is also required for the summer term only application.

Degree-seeking Students

If you are interested in earning a degree from the University, you must complete the degree-seeking undergraduate application. Once admitted, if you are unable to attend as a full-time student you must contact your college for permission to attend on a part-time basis. Please note that you are not eligible for financial aid if you attend as a part-time student.
