5 Reasons Illinois was a Great Decision

Caliber of Students

When choosing a university, I wanted to be challenged by my peers. During my four years at Illinois, I have continually been impressed by the caliber of my fellow students. They have inspired me to think differently and work harder, which has helped prepare me for future collaborative and competitive environments. Not only have my fellow peers enhanced my experience in the classroom, they will also serve as valuable professional contacts throughout my career.

Countless Opportunities

When I was in your shoes, I felt a bit overwhelmed with the size of Illinois. But with so many opportunities here, you’re bound to find your niche. I found mine in my academic department and student organizations. Getting involved at Illinois is easy. Choosing which opportunities to take advantage of is the tough part!

A Solid Investment

I know tuition costs may seem daunting, but an Illinois education will more than pay for itself in the long term. Employers recognize the strength of Illinois graduates and are happy to recruit on campus and hire for professional positions – but more on that later. In the meantime, I have found several ways to lessen the burden. By visiting the Office of Student Financial Aid Web site, you can see that aid includes grants, scholarships, and loans. Student employment is also an opportunity for aid. Finding a job on campus is easy by visiting the virtual job board.

Large Alumni Network

With more than 400,000 living alumni, Illinois has one of the largest alumni organizations in the U.S. As soon as I became a student at Illinois, I automatically had a connection with this large network that not only has helped me explore my career path but also has presented me with opportunities far beyond graduation. I’ve never met alumni that did not want to help me in one way or another.

Jobs in a Tough Economy

Graduating in May, I know how difficult the job market is right now. I also know that I am qualified for careers inside as well as outside my major. Companies are still recruiting Illinois students at the numerous career fairs hosted on campus because of the number and quality of student applicants. Illinois students are also able to land the interview and position with help from The Career Center. Job seekers like myself can take advantage of résumé and cover letter critiques and mock interviews.
