Art and Design Tuition Waiver Awards

Requirements: Awarded to incoming freshmen and continuing students, based on the quality of their portfolio

Department of Theatre

In making financial awards to its students, the Department of Theatre follows the selection criteria stipulated by the donors of the various endowment funds for scholarships, fellowships, and waivers of tuition. Where the donor does not specify criteria, the department’s Advisory Committee judges students on the basis of (1) their previous academic record, (2) their talent in, and commitment to, theatrical production as evidenced by their participation in Department of Theatre productions and/or auditions and portfolio reviews, (3) their potential for future growth, and (4) financial need.

Talented Undergraduate Student Tuition Waivers

Requirements: See criteria listed under the Department of Theatre
Amount: Range from $500 to $6,000 per year

John H. Butterfield Scholarships

Requirements: Deserving students, based on merit and/or need; must be enrolled in courses in drama and theatre in the performing arts department, exhibit significant talent in these fields, and agree to remain in and graduate from FAA.
Amount: $2,000 to be distributed among recipients

Note: The department head shall determine the recipients and the amount and timing of scholarship awards, all subject to the approval of the University of Illinois Foundation trustees.

Michael Filerman Scholarships

Requirements: Undergraduate or graduate students majoring in theatre; the recipients should be talented, exhibit a love for the theatre, and be dedicated to promoting the theatre arts. It is the donor’s preference that the recipients be those for whom the assistance provided by the fund is critical, i.e., that but for the assistance provided by the fund, the student might not be able to continue his or her education.
Amount: $3,000 to be distributed among recipients

Bernard F. Gold Scholarships

Requirements: Recipients selected based upon academic merit and only secondarily according to such other criteria as deemed appropriate by the University of Illinois. It is the donor’s further wish that among those candidates selected based on the preceding criteria, priority shall be given first to students enrolled in the Department of Theatre and secondarily to students enrolled in one of the liberal arts curricula.
Amount: $12,000 per year to be distributed among recipients

Calvin Hugy Scholarships

Requirements: Deserving undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre
Amount: About $8,000 to be distributed among recipients
Alberta L. Humble Scholarships
Requirements: Undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Department of Theatre and/or the College of Media
Amount: About $6,000 to be distributed among recipients

David and Wendy Knight Scholarships

Requirements: Deserving undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre
Amount: About $600 to be distributed among recipients

Wilbur B. Menefee Scholarships and Fellowships

Requirements: Undergraduate and/or graduate students who are enrolled in the Department of Theatre; preference in the awarding of the scholarships and/or fellowships shall be given to students who are pursuing a concentration in scene design.
Amount: About $38,000 to be distributed among recipients

Note: The head of the Department of Theatre shall determine how the scholarship and/or fellowship program will be administered, including such considerations as timing, amount, selection criteria, and renewal. Selection is subject to the approval of the appropriate University officials.

Lloyd and Edna Morey Scholarship

Requirements: Students that are in need of financial assistance and of good character, integrity and industry; selection made on a competitive basis. Three-fourths of the fund to be used as a fellowship or scholarship for a student of superior ability in voice, organ, or dramatic work in the University Theatre; one-fourth to be used for prizes for superior work in the fields mentioned above.
Amount: $2,000 to be distributed among recipients

Note: The recipients shall be chosen by the head of the Department of Theatre, or his or her designee.

Jeanette Watkins Reed Theatre Graduate Student Scholarship

Requirements: Awarded to talented and deserving graduate students in Theatre at the Urbana, Illinois campus of the University of Illinois.
Amount: $8,000 to be distributed among recipients

Note: The head of the Department of Theatre will appoint three members who shall distribute the awards.

Samuel L. Stickler Faculty Players Award

Requirements: Graduating seniors of the Department of Theatre. Selection based upon outstanding achievement in both academics and theatrical production.
Number: Two annual awards of equal amount. Typically $500 per recipient.

Note: The faculty of the Department of Theatre or designee(s) shall determine the recipients, amount, and timing of the awards (to coincide with commencement).

R. B. Ulrich Scholarships

Requirements: Deserving undergraduate and/or graduate students in theatre and/or drama
Amount: About $1,200 to be distributed among recipients

West Coast Theatre Scholarship

Requirements: Unrestricted use by the Department of Theatre.
Amount: $400 to be distributed among recipients

Note: The recipients shall be chosen by the head of the Department of Theatre, or his or her designee.
