College: Business (BUS)
One-on-One
What are your favorite places to study, hang out, and relax?
I study, hang out, and relax in my room and also head over to my friends’ dorm rooms. I love study sessions with friends. We don’t even have to say anything but working with other people makes the time go by faster. It’s more enjoyable because you know that you are not the only one with lots of homework. If I need a change of scenery, I head to the ACES Library, which is a really nice, quiet place to study too.
What clubs or organizations on campus are you involved with?
On campus, I’m a member of the College of Business Honors program and the Campus Honors Program. The Business Council is an organization that supports the College of Business by hosting programs and workshops, organizing peer advising and creating the Business book for students. The National Association of Black Accounts is a nationwide program for accountancy majors that sponsors corporate presentations and workshops to learn more about the profession and skills. The National Black MBA Association educates students about the importance of attaining a MBA after their undergraduate education. As a part of the Dance Marathon, we plan a dance marathon to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
Why and how did you choose your major?
During the 2006 summer, I participated in the summer program LEAD, Leadership Education and Development, at Illinois. At this program, I learned about the accountancy program and met the professors and other faculty members who were extremely supportive.
Describe your most memorable experience at Illinois.
My most memorable experience has to be when the Illinois football team won against the undefeated Ohio State. After the game, there was a large parade of students running through the streets toward the stadium. The campus was so exciting and the entire campus came together to celebrate.
What is your advice to prospective students?
Jump in and be involved from the first day. Get out there and meet as many people as you can, get to know your professors and classmates, and join organizations that interest you. Have an open mind and don’t be afraid to try something new. There are so many opportunities that are available to you, and a short four years to try them, so choose wisely and take advantage of it all.
