College: Media (MED)

One-on-One

What are your favorite places to study, hang out, and relax?
I get the most studying done at the Undergraduate Library and the Grainger Library. To hang out with friends and take a moment to relax, I head to the Quad on those warm, sunny days. When I get the chance, I visit Kickapoo Park to float on the river or head to relax at the restaurants and cafes.

What clubs or organizations on campus are you involved with?
I was elected a student delegate to the Counseling Center Advisory Board in order to discuss the student perspective about alternative lifestyle tolerance on campus. I also volunteered as a classroom aid through the campus program Vis-à-vis.

Why and how did you choose your major?
I was actually working toward a journalism degree when I took Advertising 300 as an elective. I fell in love with the class and transferred immediately. I transferred because I liked the creativity and open-mindness that came along with advertising. A major in advertising opens doors in business, event management, public relations, and so many other areas which really expands my career options.

Describe your most memorable experience at Illinois.
I have so many great experiences at Illinois. One of my most memorable would be walking to the Campus Recreation pool on a really hot Saturday. It felt like it took forever to get there but when we did the pool was packed. We spent the entire day joking around, enjoying the rays, and just having a great time. College is made up of the little experience, the day-to-day stuff that may seem meaningless but brings you closer to friends and our community. There is really no other time in your life when you’ll be able to just watch TV for hours on a rainy Friday afternoon with 10 of your friends, dress in ridiculous outfits for a costume theme party, or play Frisbee on the Quad packed with people.

What is your advice to prospective students?
Jump right in. Although it’s scary to go to club meetings on your own or take a class that your friends don’t want to, it’s worth it because it opens so many doors and introduces you to the most amazing people. Every activity and every hour spent getting involved pays itself back two-fold.
